Largest Protected Game Reserve

Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is Africa’s largest protected game reserve, covering over 50,000 square kilometres. This reserve was established in 1922 and due to its rich diversity of wildlife and unspoiled nature, it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1982. In 2019 the Tanzanian national park authority wanted to create a new national park by taking a part of the Northern sector of Selous Game Reserve and naming it Nyerere National Park as a way of honoring President Julius Nyerere who was the first president of Tanzania. Nyerere National Park features grasslands, Acacia savannah, lakes and rivers. Visiting the Selous Game Reserve is an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
